Shoulder Surgery

About Shoulder Surgery

You and your surgeon will together decide whether shoulder surgery is right for you, what kind, and when. You are likely to have a lot of questions about your shoulder surgery, how you can get ready, and what you can expect after your shoulder surgery. While it is impossible to describe the details of every kind of surgical procedure, many shoulder surgeries share certain similarities. For example, you will require an anesthetic so that you will not feel any pain during the surgery.

The day before your scheduled procedure, we will call you with additional instructions and reminders. You will be told when and where to come the next morning, and you will be reminded not to eat or drink anything after midnight. This does not apply to the medications that you have been instructed to take the morning of surgery with a small sip of water. Be sure to follow these recommendations strictly, as your shoulder surgery might otherwise have to be re-scheduled.

After your shoulder surgery, you will probably go home the same day; but some medical conditions and procedures may require an overnight stay at the St. Vincent Orthopedic Center. Make sure to plan for your surgery accordingly taking your work, family and other obligations into account.

You are very likely to need to wear a bandage, brace or sling for some time, and you will likely need to have some amount of physical therapy after your surgery for the best result possible. Be sure to follow instructions and attend all appointments for the best results from your shoulder surgery.
