Just as the median nerve can be compressed by the transverse carpal ligament in carpal tunnel syndrome, the suprascapular nerve can be compressed at the suprascapular notch. Recent work suggests that suprascapular nerve entrapment may also be a factor in large and massive rotator cuff tears. As in carpal tunnel syndrome an electro-diagnostic test (EMG/NCV) can help confirm the diagnosis. While previously requiring an open incision for decompression of the nerve, recent work by Dr. Lafosse in France and Dr. Bhatia et al in South Africa has outlined a reproducible and safe approach to arthroscopic decompression of the suprascapular nerve. Our own experience and early results with this technique have been promising.
